The number of claims are increasing (we’ll reach 2,000 later today), and going forward it’ll be important to make sure that the claims you’d care about don’t slip by unnoticed. While claims and cred are front and center on Jyte, there are two features of the site that will help you connect with the right people, and find the claims that interest you most. I’m talking about groups and contacts.
Groups
Groups are gatherings of like-minded people within Jyte. They are a great way to find interesting people, and to associate yourself with communities and issues you care about. With over 100 created in Jyte’s first week, it’s likely that you’ll connect with at least a few of the existing groups. Want to create your own “Astrozoology” group? Go right ahead! Groups may be public or invite only, and will help you connect with your fellow astrozoologists on the web.

Contacts
Contacts provide a way to manage your personal Jyte connections. You may add anyone on Jyte as a contact, and use tags to describe your relationship. For example, I’ve added Scott Kveton to my contacts, and tagged the connection with friend, co-worker, and janrain. When any one of your contacts makes a claim, it’ll show up on your Jyte Homepage.
Easy social whitelisting
One of the coolest things about Jyte groups and contacts is that their membership is accessible via an API. This means that other programs and websites can access groups and contacts membership lists. For example, if you are writing a blog post about OpenID and only want people in the OpenID Hackers group to be able to comment, you may configure your blog to allow only comments by members of that group.
Simon Willison calls this technique social whitelisting, and has wrote a great post about it on his blog. Simply put, social whitelisting is the act of publishing a list of people you trust. Others can use your whitelists for their own purposes like access control or building anti-spam trust networks.
Are you using a tool like the Apache OpenID Access Control to share files with a trusted group of friends or co-workers? Manage your ACL on Jyte with an invite only group or your contact list.
