Jyte Demo at Bar Camp Portland

This weekend is Portland’s first BarCamp. BarCamp is an event with no agenda except to bring the local tech community together to discuss and learn in an open environment. It is an intense ad-hoc gathering with discussions, demos, and interaction from participants. BarCampPortland will be held this Friday May 11th and Saturday May 12th at CubeSpace, check out the website for specific times. If you are interested in sharing and learning about what is going on in Portland’s tech community this event is for you. Attendance is free, food is free, and we’ll be giving a Jyte demo Saturday evening as part of the DemoCamp.

See you there!

Claimrollin’

Today we launched a small new feature called claimrolls. A claimroll is simply a set of recent claims that you may embed on an external webpage or blog. It’s a way to spread Jyte and get the people who are looking at your sites to participate in the claims that are important to you. The claimroll comes in two flavors:

Personal Claimrolls

Below is an example of a personal claimroll in which I’ve listed the latest claim others have made about me. You can create personal rolls that include claims that are about you, that you’ve made, commented on, voted on, or are watching.

Adding a claimroll to your blog sidebar is a fun way to engage your website readers, and for them to learn more about you.

Tag Claimrolls

A tag claimroll is not associated with a particular user like personal rolls. Instead, a tag claimroll lists the most recent claims that match a certain set of tags. For example, below I’ve rolled the two most recent claims tagged “politics”.

If you look in the sidebar to the right, you’ll see I’ve added a roll for recent claims tagged with “Jyte”.

Tag claimrolls are especially cool for sites that discuss specific topics, or want to allow their readers to participate and add polls to the site. For example, a blog about monkeys may add a tag claimroll to its sidebar for claims about “monkeys” OR “monkeyblog”. Readers would see claims about monkeys and also be able to create Jyte claims tagged with “monkeyblog” and have them show up on the blog for other readers to vote on.

Creating a Claimroll

To create a personal claimroll, log into Jyte and click the “Home” link at the top. From there, click the “widgets” link, and then follow the steps to create your roll.

To create a tag claimroll, browse to the list of claims with that tag and click the “Claimroll” link to the left. Here’s a quick link to the Tag Claimroll Creator tool.

Jyte Cred Bubbles

It amazes me when we see users doing cool things with the data on Jyte.

This morning I stumbled across Jyte Cred Bubbles (warning: Java applet). This is a really cool application that takes the Jyte cred data and publishes it in an easy-to-read/navigate bubble format. Very cool stuff.

Jyte Cred Bubbles

This isn’t the only cool thing we’ve seen from our users … famed Jyte user Ryan Grove has also build the JyteBot. JyteBot allows you to track comments and claims that might be about you by watching Jyte Spy and then reporting back to you via Jabber. Very cool!!! I’m lovin’ these fun new applications of Jyte and some very exciting things are yet to come!

March-ing along with new features!

March is here in the beautiful City of Roses and with it comes (a little) more rain, great craft beers and of course new Jyte features!! Here is a brief list of some of the new features … more to follow soon!!:

  • See every voter: For the people who just have to know who voted on what we no longer truncate the list of who voted on what claims. Now you can actuallysee who voted on what (in this case who loves Portland craft beers).
  • Tag love: You can now view all of the users interested in a specific tag and have given/received cred for that tag. For example, you can see that there a several users that have beer cred (how am I #3 on that list?!). You can also see the different users that are interested in beer or have mentioned it in comments, etc.
  • Comment preview: That’s right, we can now preview comments! You don’t have to sweat getting it right the first time when you post a comment. Just “Preview” it first and you’ll never (rarely?) go wrong! :-)
  • Big Speed Improvement: This is from the will-always-be-in-the-new-features list because the Jyte team is constantly tweaking things to make them faster. Traffic keeps growing and with growth comes the need to go faster … we’re on the scene and making it happen!

One of the coolest things we keep seeing are people that make claims about how to make Jyte better. People will make a claim about a feature they want or a bug they have found and voila! Within days (hours sometimes) the feature appears on the site! So keep claiming about features and most importantly keep voting on features you want on the site!

Finally, last but not least, a big shout out to our top claimants Vynce (313), Ben Breedlove (309) and Oscar J Carlton IV (296) … without you folks Jyte wouldn’t be the fun and absolutely enthralling place that it is … thanks.
