New features abound!

Sometimes in life we just don’t use enough exclamation points! Well I’m changing that! Today is officially “International Exclamation Point Day”!

Or not. :-)

I’m just excited about the latest Jyte features. The Jyte team keeps on knockin’ ‘em dead with the new fun stuff they are adding all the time:

  • User ranks: You can now view all kinds of user rankings on all manner of things. Most votes? Top claimant? Most comments? Now you can see it all plain as day.
  • Spy!: We have the coolest thing going in “Spy!” technology … Jyte Spy! is here and gives you the ability to see what’s happening in real time on the site all in one page. Votes, claims, comments … you name it. Its all there for you to see. Quite fun (and enthralling IMHO).
  • Ignore User: Is there a user you’re just tired of seeing claims from? Guess what, you can ignore them! Head over the users’ profile page and the “Ignore user” option will reveal itself.
  • Bug fixes and Speed! (with a capital S): We’ve heard you when we have a bug. You’re all so responsive and we’re trying to respond as quickly as we can. Your patience has been rewarded with lots of bug fixes. Also, we’ve tweaked a bunch of the site to make it much faster. Its one of those things you can never test until you actually have half-a-million page views under your belt.

Thanks again everybody! Jyte is really taking off and its because of all of you!

Our Terms of Service

Its funny when you build a site like Jyte. Our users have the means to speak out about new features, bugs in the site and problems with our terms of service:

buy viagra
buy propecia
food nutrition
free pets
weight loss
buy viagra

Well, as it turns out, we spent a lot more time working on making the site a great experience than we did reading over the terms of service for the site. As such, some of the boiler-plate that is in there is just plain silly. We want you to use the site in any and all ways, including retransmission. That’s what the API and widgets are all about.

In any case, we hear you, loud and clear, and we’ll be actually spending some time making a better terms of service that isn’t silly.

Thanks everybody for your input, thoughts and most importantly your time and effort in making Jyte such a great place. Oh yeah, and thanks for your patience with us when we do silly things like this … :-)

RSS Love to the Jyte-stars

My lord!! The Jyte team are maniacs!! (in the good way of course)

We’ve heard folks clamoring for RSS feeds for days now:

and the today the guys delivered!! You’ve got a couple of options for the views that you might want of this stuff.

Today the guys got RSS feeds going of claims. You’ve got a couple of options for this:

This is great! I was already getting obsessive about Jyte and now I can get crazy obsessive! :-) Did you know that this means that Jyte now works with Yahoo! Pipes?!:

Proof positive can be found here and here.

Woohoo! And happy claiming now! Great work guys!

Groups and contacts

The number of claims are increasing (we’ll reach 2,000 later today), and going forward it’ll be important to make sure that the claims you’d care about don’t slip by unnoticed. While claims and cred are front and center on Jyte, there are two features of the site that will help you connect with the right people, and find the claims that interest you most. I’m talking about groups and contacts.

Groups
Groups are gatherings of like-minded people within Jyte. They are a great way to find interesting people, and to associate yourself with communities and issues you care about. With over 100 created in Jyte’s first week, it’s likely that you’ll connect with at least a few of the existing groups. Want to create your own “Astrozoology” group? Go right ahead! Groups may be public or invite only, and will help you connect with your fellow astrozoologists on the web.

Check out these popular groups:

Contacts
Contacts provide a way to manage your personal Jyte connections. You may add anyone on Jyte as a contact, and use tags to describe your relationship. For example, I’ve added Scott Kveton to my contacts, and tagged the connection with friend, co-worker, and janrain. When any one of your contacts makes a claim, it’ll show up on your Jyte Homepage.

Easy social whitelisting
One of the coolest things about Jyte groups and contacts is that their membership is accessible via an API. This means that other programs and websites can access groups and contacts membership lists. For example, if you are writing a blog post about OpenID and only want people in the OpenID Hackers group to be able to comment, you may configure your blog to allow only comments by members of that group.

Simon Willison calls this technique social whitelisting, and has wrote a great post about it on his blog. Simply put, social whitelisting is the act of publishing a list of people you trust. Others can use your whitelists for their own purposes like access control or building anti-spam trust networks.

Are you using a tool like the Apache OpenID Access Control to share files with a trusted group of friends or co-workers? Manage your ACL on Jyte with an invite only group or your contact list.

Share your Jyte API hacks on the wiki!

The first 1,322 claims

Wow! What a response to Jyte! Its only been a few days and we’ve already had such a great response from this newly forming Jyte community.

Before I share a list of the different claims folks have made, I thought I would let folks know some of the things happening behind-the-scenes.

  • Keep joining and making those groups … we’ll be adding some fun functionality to those very soon as well as publishing the data in more formats for your use on other sites.
  • Do you have some code or hacks you’ve built that leverage the Jyte API? If so, head over to the Jyte Fan Club page and add yours today! The password for the wiki is ‘jyteiscool’.
  • Biggest feature requests (they are on the way!):
    • RSS feeds for claims, cred, etc.
    • API for creating claims and updating cred
    • Means for discussing claims
    • User cred widget to put on your own site

Over the last couple of days, there have been some great claims that people have made. For some reason, people are very fixated on beverages:

I have no idea where they get that last claim from.

There have been some interesting/odd claims as well:

Claims with pictures:

Politically charged:

Ones that only geeks can appreciate:

Fortunately, Dag was the voice of reason:

And of course passionate users … Jay Carlton made 98 claims!

Thanks for helping us launch this service and we’re excited … the best is yet to come!!

What is Jyte?

Jyte is a place to make claims about yourself, others, or just about anything. It’s a place for web surfers to see what you are up to and what you’re thinking. It’s a place to learn more about friends, and for others to learn about you through your claims, votes, and cred. It’s a place to build out your social network and share it with other sites. It’s a place to use your shiny new OpenID, and a place for people who see your OpenID around the web to discover your world.

Over the next few days we’ll be diving into deeper into claims, cred, votes, and Jyte’s social networking tools. For now, simply check out the site. Weigh in on the most contested claims, and voice your opinion on the most discussed claims. Or just make a claim!

So, what is Jyte? In a claim:
